and the next promiser is...

Name: Shelley Given
Age: 27
Occupation: Starving artist, teacher of college students, random free-lance work
Place of Residence: Bloomington, IN south of town in the burbs

1. I was thinking that my promise would take place once a week. That each Sunday, I would not use electricity for 8 hrs (a full-working day)— I would not use my phone (actually unplug the charger from the wall), my computer, lights etc.

2. It wouldn’t be an eradication but an abstinence every week when I would have to get things accomplished, but not be able to rely on electric powered technology.I rely on my computer for everything— rather than spending times researching in books, I
hop on the internet even though I like books better and complain about sitting in front
of a computer all day (I’m being lazy). I also waste time checking my email twelve times a day when once or twice will do, and burn brain cells looking at things on Facebook. My cell phone also makes me lazy in my interactions with people— rather than making firm plans and sticking to them, I make vague plans which makes it easy to break plans and also rather than calling someone and planning everything once, inevitably there are multiple phone calls and text messages because someone forgot to tell the other person something- it makes me less aware and less responsible/ organized. Rather than being more aware of the things going on around me (i.e. life) I’m plugged into some kind of technology. It would be better for the environment if I was more conscious of my energy usage, and
tried to manage it better. What can I get done without electricity?

3. Make a list the week before of tasks and things to get accomplished before hand that would require electricity, and also make a list of the tasks/ things that I could do during my blackout time that would use the time constructively. I would also have to be more responsible and organized in general, as well as communicate more clearly with individuals with whom I’ve made plans.

4. It would be better for the environment if I was more conscious of my energy usage, and tried to manage it better. What can I get done without electricity?

she may decide to do what shelly is proposing, but her idea is to:

1. Use less paper/ recycle more paper in my office
2. I recycle a lot of things on a daily basis but office paper is one I haven’t got a handle on quite yet.
3. Keep containers by my desk in order not to put it in the general wastebasket and re-use any printed paper for drafts?
4. For me it would be implementing another step of recycling into my daily practice. In the larger picture I would be saving and reusing our natural resources.

Sentence for plate:Reducing the amount of paper I use as well as reusing and recycling the office paper that I do consume.

  1. Week 1:
Day 1. (thurs) – didn’t use any paper in my office. I think I’m gun shy and don’t trust myself to properly dispose of it.
Day 2. (fri 23)– I successfully printed out some forms on both sides of my paper..….I I took a chance but think I can do this.
Day 3. (sat 24) – was in a workshop all day and didn’t use any paper at all in my office.
Day 4. (sun 25) - I have officially set aside a paper bag to continue my mission. I’m committed.
Report on fellow Promise Plate participant:
Sunday oct 25th – I believe Shelley Given is cheating. Her idea is to not use any kind of electricity for 8 hours on five Sundays and I know for a fact that she is returning from Florida on this very Sunday. She is therefore:
    1. Using electricity at the hotel
    2. Most likely using her phone
    3. On a plane using jet fuel – yea, I know that one is the worst!!!
    4. Then she will be in her car for the drive home on 67 b/c I know she is too lazy to walk that far.
